This site is the first step in a long-term project: to gather the history of the Maguires of Fermanagh in one place, carefully sourced, and to make it easy for descendants to find where they belong.
The family tree
At its heart is the family tree, which opens today as a preview. It brings together nearly four thousand people from Geinealaighe Fearmanach, the great collection of Fermanagh genealogies, together with the chiefs’ dates from its list of the lords of Fermanagh and entries matched from the Annals of Ulster. You can search it in Irish or English, follow any line back towards Donn Carrach, and open the descendants of any man in the tree.
The tree was first extracted from the printed text by computer, and we are now checking it line by line. Some links and names will be wrong for a while yet. If you spot one, please let us know.
Biographies
We have also begun a series of biographies, starting with four men who shaped the lordship: Donn Carrach, the first Maguire king; Hugh ‘the Hospitable’; Hugh Maguire, victor at the Ford of the Biscuits; and Cú Chonnacht Óg, who brought the ship for the Flight of the Earls.
What comes next
Over the coming months we will keep reviewing the tree, add more biographies, and bring in further sources. If your family is a Maguire line, we would love to hear its story.
